One in 10 young adults in UK identify as lesbian, gay or bi – ONS
Around one in 10 young adults in the UK identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual person (LGB), a proportion of the population which has doubled in the past five years, according to figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
Just over 10% of 16- to 24-year-olds identified as LGB in 2023 – the most recent window polled – up from 4.4% in 2018, according to data from the Annual Population Survey.
A acute rise in the number of young people detecting as bisexual was a key reason for the increase, said the ONS. Some 7.5% of people aged 16-24 identified as bisexual in 2023, up from 2.8% in 2018. The figure was even higher among women aged 16-24, with 9.2% naming as bisexual compared with 5.9% of males.
Simon Blake, the chief executive of LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall said the data should be “a wake-up call to organisations and governments who are rolling back on their commitments to Homosexual rights and inclusion”.
“Lesbian, male lover and bisexual people are a growing part of UK society, with more LGB young people than ever before,” he said. “The more than one in 10 of 16-24 year-olds identifying as LGB will be a cruc
We’re here to help youthful gay and same sex attracted men (under 26) take control of their health.
We provide information on relevant health issues, and we offer a range of specific and general services delivered by compassionate people who genuinely grasp the health issues affecting young gay and similar sex attracted men.
Our Operate With Young Gay Men
We run a range of FREE peer-led events, workshops and projects for male lover and same-sex attracted guys aged 18-26.
Through our serve , we provide a place where young guys can meet each other and make new friends in a safe, social environment. Here they can give ideas with their peers and learn more about identity, coming out, sex and sexual health, fit relationships and more.
Young lgbtq+ men have lower rates of HIV and sexual health testing than older members of the society. Of course, this makes sense. Only after people overcome the initial barriers to testing for the first time are they able to commit to a regular testing pattern. We help young guys to share their experiences around testing and realize why regular testing is important for all sexually active gay men.
We operate in both a face-to-face capacity as well as online
Safeguarding LGBTQ+ children and adolescent people
Risks of harm
Evidence suggests that LGBTQ+ children and young people might be at increased risk of some forms of harm.
Child sexual exploitation
LGBTQ+ relationships are underrepresented in educational resources and the media (Barnardo’s and Fox, 2016). This means there are fewer examples of relevant, robust relationships available to Homosexual young people. If Queer young people are not taught about healthy and unhealthy relationships, it might be easier for an abuser to groom them into believing an abusive relationship is normal.
If Homosexual young people are unable to get information about sex and relationships from school or family, they might seek advice and support from people in adult spaces, such as gay clubs. This is particularly true of adolescent people who live in rural areas or in communities where their gender identity or sexuality is not accepted. Adult spaces don’t have the matching safeguarding and child protection measures in place as spaces specifically for children. Children might be pressured or coerced into doing something they don’t need to do, particularly if they are already isolated and don’t have anywhere els
Gay Relationship Advice: Age Gaps in Gay Relationships
Many of my LGBTQ counseling clients ask me why they are only attracted to gay men younger than themselves. If you are happy dating gay men in their twenties, then this question is not important. It’s like asking “Why do I opt favor blondes over brunettes?” My advice is to allow yourself enjoy dating whomever interests you (as elongated as they are over the age of 18).
Age gap relationships are more common than you may realize. In western countries:
- 1 out of every twelve male/female couples has an age gap of 10 years or more
- that number increase to 25% in male/male couples
- and 15% of female/female relationships
That same examine indicated that age gap partners are more satisfied and more committed to each other than partners of similar age–though there is some research that points to a correlation with higher rates of divorce. Research also shows that couples with an age gap of less than ten years are happier than those with an age gap greater than ten years.
