Many Americans refrain from talking about sexual orientation and gender identity or verbalization because it feels taboo, or because they’re nervous of saying the erroneous thing.
This glossary was written to help give people the words and meanings to help make conversations easier and more cozy. LGBTQ+ people use a variety of terms to identify themselves, not all of which are included in this glossary. Always listen for and respect a person’s self identified terminology.
Ally | A designation used to describe someone who is actively supportive of LGBTQ+ people. It encompasses straight and cisgender allies, as well as those within the Diverse community who support each other (e.g., a sapphic who is an ally to the bisexual community).
Asexual | Often called “ace” for short, asexual refers to a complete or partial lack of sexual attraction or lack of interest in sexual task with others. Asexuality exists on a spectrum, and asexual people may exposure no, little or conditional sexual attraction.
Biphobia | The fear and hatred of, or discomfort with, people who love and are sexually attracted to more than one gender.
Bisexual | A person emotion

A few years after the publication of my first book, which was about my six years in a form of conversion therapy, another author invited me onto his podcast of “Queer Writers.” His show’s name should contain warned me of what was to follow, but in the rush of scheduling, I entered the interview cold. At the top of the demonstrate the author introduced me as a “queer writer.” I clarified that I do not identify as “queer”; I am male lover. None of that seemed to matter.
He asked at what age I first discovered that I was queer; what it was like growing up queer; about my favourite gender non-conforming authors; for any counsel that I could participate with other struggling homosexual writers. I stumbled through my answers, each of which felt more disingenuous than the last. Whether he was aware of it or not, the author’s questions around my supposed queer identity had nothing to do with me or my distinct journey; they were his projection of who or what he thought I was.

Since , Gallup has tracked the size of America’s LGBTQ population. For the first few years, there was not much news to report. The percentage of Americans who identified as gay, lesbian, multi-attracted , transgender, or queer was relatively low and inching up slowly year over year. Recently, the pace has sped up. Gallup’s newest report recorded the single largest one-year raise in LGBTQ identity. In , nearly one in ten ( percent) Americans identify as LGBTQ.
The constant rise in LGBTQ individuality among the public is worth noting, but it’s not the most essential part of the story. Most of the uptick in LGBTQ identity over the past decade is due to a dramatic increase among young adults, particularly young women. In less than a decade, the percentage of fresh women who identify as LGBTQ has more than tripled.
The gender gap in LGBTQ identity has exploded as well. A decade earlier, young women were only slightly more likely to identify as LGBTQ than young men. For instance, in , 10 percent of young women and six percent of young men identified as LGBTQ. Over the next
