Kristen Stewart says her femininity saved her as a queer actor in Hollywood
No actor owes us perception into their sexuality and it’s understandable when they choose not to split that story with the world, since, when they do, it generates a million headlines (like this one) and every stranger on the internet has an opinion about it (like me). But what a gift it is when people in the public eye do perceive comfortable and open to sharing that part of themselves with us.
In her cover interview with Variety, “How Kristen Stewart Became a Queer Trailblazer”, Kristen Stewart opens up quite candidly about her journey with her sexuality, queerness and gender expression.
She talks about how hard it was to have people speculating about her sexuality and projecting onto her while she was still figuring it out herself – “for so prolonged, I was like, ‘Why are you trying to skewer me? Why are you trying to spoil my life?’... The plan of people going, ‘I knew that you were a little queer kid forever.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah? Well, you should honestly have seen me fuck my first boyfriend.’”
But then after recently re-watching her 2002 film Panic Room, she can glimpse the queerness that others in
Kristen Stewart rose to fame through her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight movie series, which was released between 2008 and 2012.
While on the surface the films are about the romance between a regular school teen (Stewart) and the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), Stewart has had a lot of time to reflect on the movies since they ended, and she sees distinct "gay" undertones in them.
"I can only see it now," she told Variety.

For context, Stewart is openly same-sex attracted, and got engaged to her girlfriend Dylan Meyer back in 2021.
"It’s such a gay movie," she continued. "I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor [Lautner] and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK. I express, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to ruin you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love."
Stewart has two movies coming up soon: Love Me, which premieres at Sundance Festival on Jan. 19, and Love Lies Bleeding, which will be released March 8.

Kristen Stewart opens up about her sexuality, says she struggled to understand her identity
The actor, who identifies as bisexual in concrete life, said she endured a long struggle knowledge her identity but is happy she was capable to "articulate" who she is.
"I'm so lucky to live in this particular time of history... If you were to glance at kids right now, even just five years, seven to 10 years younger than me, they would find my sort of struggle to reach to terms with fancy identity and communication gentle of silly.
"And I feed off them, even though I think that I might've had something to do with feeding that, a little bit, because it was like... not the hardest thing to get to know myself it was just ... it takes a rare years to actually articulate who you are. And now that I'm living in a time where that's fully allowed, in a way that is expressed and honest ... that wasn't that way five to seven years ago," Stewart told E! News.
The 29-year-old actor was speaking at the premiere of her latest "Charlie's Angels".

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, actor Kristen Stewart, who has been romantically linked to model Stella Maxwell since 2017, said, “I possess fully been told, ‘If you just like complete yourself a favor, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might receive a Marvel movie.’ I don’t want to operate with people like that.”
Stewart has said publicly she does not identify as bisexual or lesbian, and doesn’t want to pick a label for her sexuality. In the alike interview she added, “I was informed by an aged school mentality, which is — you want to preserve your career and your success and your productivity, and there are people in the nature who don’t like you, and they don’t enjoy that you date girls, and they don’t favor that you don’t determine as a quote unquote ‘lesbian’, but you also don’t identify as a quote unquote ‘heterosexual’. And people like to recognize stuff, so what the fuck are you?’”
