The Heal frontman Robert Smith proved to fans that his marriage of over three decades to his wife, Mary Poole, is as strong as ever.

In the closing moments of Plainsong, the opener to the band’s classic 1989 album Disintegration, Smith was seen turning offstage and locking eyes with his wife to sing the lines: “Sometimes you make me feel / Like I'm living at the edge of the world / Like I'm living at the edge of the world / "It's just the way I smile/.

Smith then turned away from his partner since secondary school and thanking the crowd at the first of three shows they played at the famed Hollywood Bowl on the 24th May.

Frank Padilla, who captured this moment on his phone, said he: “...happen[ed] to be at probably the best if not the only angle you could have seen this,” and as a result, suddenly saw his profile inundated with over 150k views on the video as well as hundreds of replies and retweets.

I’m really into these nice manga illustrations which were published back in the 80s in a Japanese music magazine called 8 Beat Gag. Written in Japanese, most (if not all) are likely by the the rather prolific manga artist Atsuko Shima—but she wasn’t the only artist that created the cartoons that featured widespread musical acts in weird situations that Japanese youth were obsessing about.

The fantastic cartoon of Finnish band Hanoi Rocks, which may have also been published in 8 Beat Gag, did show up as a surprise insert UK pressings of the band’s last record 1984’s Two Steps From the Move. Which makes me crave to hunt a duplicate down just so I can have one of my own. When it comes to finding copies of 8 Beat Gag, good luck. As when they do pop up (which they occasionally do), they will cost you a tidy sum. The comic featuring The Remedy (where Robert Smith Inexplicably morphs into some sort of goth Yeti. Because, Japan), follows in its entirety as well as a few others featuring Siouxsie Sioux going up against Girlschool in some sort of track event involving vegetables, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, Marc Bolan, Peter Murphy, Morrissey and 80s New Wavers Ultravox.

The Cure is Needed Now!

On March 29th, 2019, as The Cure stood on the red carpet before their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, their lead singer – the eternally-lipsticked Robert Smith – was accosted by a brash reporter who, in classic American fashion, belted, “Are you as Thrilled as I am?!?!”. Equally true to form, and visibly wincing from her sensory assault, Mr.Smith inaudibly replied,”…apparently not”.

Despite their relatively upbeat post-punk debut in 1979, The Cure fast ascended to the ranks of royalty as“kings of gloom”; people who made it not only acceptable to openly live through one’s depressive states; in the right circles, they even made it watch “cool”.

As recent studies unveil that depression is on the rise worldwide, The Cure’s receipt of Rock’s highest honour not only seems fittingly timely; it also validates those who were bullied for entity their fans in decades past. And, as Robert Smith and Co. arrange thirtieth anniversary concerts of their album Disintegration (arguably their darkest record) we can almost hear their throngs of fans silently chime, “We told you so”.

Even further cementing their importance, beyond becoming
